Native grass naturally occuring in sand dunes along  the Great lakes, Atlantic Ocean & can be found as far south as North Carolina.  
Provides essential habitats for conservation of birds, wildlife & prevents sand erosion
Thrives in shifting sand, & high winds
Often used for dune restoration projects
Spreads by rhizomes 
Grows 1-3 ft tall 
A spike-like panicle can reach up to 10 inches long  
Spikelet is single-flowered
